Any suggestions for sciatic nerve pain other than a chiropractor?

I am 24 weeks pregnant and having sciatic nerve pain. I had it with my first pregnancy as well and know how much worse its going to get! I need some at-home type remedies, as I just can’t afford to see a chiropractor.

I had horrible sciatica when I was pregnant with my daughter. While seeing a chiropractor for sciatica may have helped some people, it made mine many times worse than it was. I would say… be glad you can’t afford a chiropractor! Since sciatica is nerve pain and not muscle, I don’t see how anyone could get any relief that way. (I do swear by my chiropactor for other aches and pains, though!)

I honestly only got relief for good once I delivered the baby. I tried different sleeping positions, sitting positions, walking in a different way. Nothing gave me any consistent relief. Sleeping was a bit easier when I slept with a pillow between my knees (with the knees separated a bit, the nerve wasn’t pulled as much when I was sleeping).

I was told by my OB (and my mother-in-law, otherwise known as "she who knows all") that nothing but delivery would really help the pain.

Be glad you didn’t have it start until now! Mine started this time around at about 12 weeks!

    Good luck.

try yoga, I went to the book store, and got a deck of yoga cards for prenancy. It helped me with my sciatic pain. It’s called "The Prenatal Yoga Deck" by Olivia H. Miller

Ok well there is only a limit number of options:
    cushions when sitting anywhere
    sleeping on the opposite sit
    leaning when sitting
heating pads – only on your butt though

Other then that there really is nothing to do, even a chiro is going to be difficult.

STAY AWAY from a chiropractor, instead try a pain management DR. or a sports med DR. I have had 2 surgery for my back, My primary DR. is a pain management DR. Good luck, my back is jacked up for life.

sleep with pillows between your legs…
get on all fours and rock back and forth (this really helped me)
on all fours arch your back and hold for 20sec and release(repeat)
    also warm(not HOT!) baths.
    Good luck!
    prenatal massage(pricey though)

Hopefully there is a friend around. Have them massage (with lotion) the area frequently. The only good thing about chiropractor’s are they have adjustable tables for pregnant ladies. So, you might want to rethink your chiropractor idea. Whoever does this has to do it right. Massage, then squeeze the area all over. Then massage.

I also suggest the prenatal yoga deck…they are great.
Doing pelvic tilts should help a lot as well.
Warm baths, massage, pillow between the legs…all good.

I would ALSO get a birthing ball. Sit on it instead of the couch. Keep good posture and bend forward. This will stretch the muscles that are pulling on the sciatic nerve. I also lay back on my ball and let it roll up my back…this may not help with sciatica but it does stretch everything out nicely.
